The Doctor and Mrs. Ayer |
For seven years Mrs. Ayer was in and out of the local hospital. If it wasn’t her heart it was her back or her lungs or her insides. Each time they patched her up and sent her home knowing in a couple months the ambulance would pull up to the emergency room and dispatch Mrs. Ayer once again. Because of her medical condition her doctors could not take the chance to perform the operation so desperately needed to stop the occasional bleeding. So they would patch her up and after a couple weeks in the hospital send her home. And so it went on year after year for seven long years. In the last half of 2007 Mrs. Ayer was a patient in the hospital three times in six months, each time near death. But after a month or two of hospital stay she gained enough strength to go home. Then in January 2008 she arrived one more time at the healing house me call a hospital. After three weeks her condition did not improve and the bleeding did not stop. Pint after pint of blood plasma was pored into her veins. It now was decision time. Either operate or she would bleed to death. On February 1 she was wheeled into the operating room. The operation to stop the bleeding was a success, but because of her lung condition she could not be taken of the respirator. After 24 hellish days in Intensive Care Mrs. Ayer lost her seven-year battle. Over Mrs. Ayer’s seven year fight one hospital doctor usually took care of her. He comforted her with his bedside manner and took care of her with compassion and professionalism. They grew to be a team, to be friends and to respect each other. I dedicate this web page to my sister-in-law, Mrs. Ayer. |
